Tarun Tejpal moves Supreme Court challenging Bombay HC conviction and 10-year sentence

Journalist Tarun Tejpal filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on Thursday challenging the judgment of the Bombay High Court that convicted him in a sexual assault case.

According to court officials, Tejpal’s petition directly challenges both the underlying conviction and the 10-year prison sentence awarded by the High Court.

Tejpal’s legal move comes days after the Goa government approached the apex court seeking a stiffer penalty for the former editor.

In its petition, the state government argued that the gravity of the offense warrants the maximum punishment under the law—a life sentence.

Defense Appeal: Seeks setting aside of the High Court’s conviction and 10-year jail term.

State Appeal: Seeks enhancement of the sentence from 10 years to life imprisonment.

Next Steps: The Supreme Court is expected to list both cross-petitions for hearing in due course.
